2K Recruits Apex Legends Lead to Revitalize Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Comes After Lukewarm Feedback

The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last fall.

Recently, 2K president a key figure informed staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a more defined direction.

The president expressed that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised vision, aiming to address community desires.

Trend of Strategic Hires

The news follows a similar move taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the entire content from the president's communication:

Team—

I know you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative creators we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to endure.”

Through your commitment and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It highlighted the requirement for a sharper vision.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the feedback to heart and overhauled the title with a refreshed vision - one that’s ready to deliver on its ambition to our players.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To advance the remarkable progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of the team. After some time of discussions, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.

His guidance and experience in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having devoted the recent years creating and overseeing some of the most well-known titles in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in greeting Ben in the coming days. We are all eager to keep witnessing the progress of the game in the weeks to follow.

Background of the Incoming Head

Brinkman currently serves in the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Vision

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a public demo. Initially, 31st Union described the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the genre."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the official summary explains. "Challenge the competition with unique powers, stakes, and tests that change every session. Will you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, risk it all, and pray your team can earn top ranking? The option is up to you."

Project Ethos has not yet received an official launch window or supported systems, but fans can expect additional details as creation continues.
